Best Car Battery

It is incredibly frustrating when everything else about your car is running smoothly—except for the battery. Replacing it is expensive, and you can only pray you’re not in the middle of the freeway when it dies. Hence, you need to have the best car battery that is worth the money.

Lead-Acid or regular batteries are relatively low-maintenance and are more affordable than AGM. Absorbed Glass Mat is built for repeated charging and draining cycles. This variation is recommended for cars that sit in garages for long periods.

Types of Car Batteries

Wet Cell Batteries – These batteries are filled with lead acid and designed especially for automotive use. There are two main types of wet cell batteries.

SLI BatterySLI stands for “Starting lights ignition”.These are designed to start your car with quick bursts of energy. Most consumer cars come with this battery.

Deep Cycle BatteryThese types of batteries are designed to last longer and deliver long-term energy. This is done by releasing lower levels of currents in longer periods of time.

VRLA Batteries – VRLA stands for “Valve-regulated lead-acid.” These batteries are sealed and do not vent gases, meaning they can be stored in places without ventilation. The two types of VRLA batters are:

Gel Cell – It is named so because of its gelled electrolyte. These batteries can withstand harsh conditions, including high temperatures and physical shock.

Absorbed Glass MatIn this type of battery, the electrolyte is held between glass mats. Absorbed glass mat and gel cell batteries work the same way as wet cell batteries, except they are sealed and dry.

How to Maintain Your Car Battery

Here are some tips in making your car battery life last longer. They require quite a bit of maintenance, so you’ll be needing a hand from professional mechanics from time to time.

If it’s a wet cell battery, check the water level every 2-3 months. Refill it with distilled water using a funnel if the water level is low.

With a paste mix of baking soda and distilled water, use a wire brush to clean the battery terminals every 6-8 months.

To protect your battery from rust and corrosion, coat it with multi-purpose grease that can withstand high temperatures.

Take your car to a mechanic regularly for check-ups and tune-ups. Have your battery inspected and tested every 3,000 miles.

Have the cell voltage inspected by a mechanic or do it yourself using a multimeter. A fully charged battery should have 12.5-12.6 volts.

How to Choose a Car Battery

There are many batteries to choose from, but in buying one there are 5 always major factors you need to consider:

Size – Check the user’s manual to see which size battery is ideal for your car. It should fit your battery tray quickly and with ease.

Brand – The user’s manual may specify the ideal brand to use, but it’s always recommended that you use standard or high-end brands.

Reserve capacity – A battery’s reserve capacity determines the amount of minutes it can keep a car running using minimum voltage. This happens in the event that the car’s alternator or fan belt malfunctions.

Age – Look for the date codes stamped on the battery case/label. The more recent the manufacturing date, the longer it will last.

Type – Check the user’s manual for the type of battery required for your vehicle. You don’t want to end up buying a battery that’s incompatible with your car.

Care to Take When Using a Car Battery

If you’re planning to inspect and replace your batteries without the help of a mechanic, there are several important safety precautions to follow:

Do not attempt to disassemble a car battery. Car batteries contain harmful substances that, if you make direct contact with, will require immediate medical attention.

Remove all jewellery before handling car batteries. Most jewellery acts as conductors through which electrical currents and charges can pass.

Wear gloves, head protection, and the appropriate clothes when handling car batteries. This is to protect your eyes, face, and skin from harmful substances that the battery may leak.

Inspect your batteries yearly for cracks, corrosion, and leaks to prevent injuries as well as damage to your car from happening.

Keep the batteries away from cigarettes and other substances/objects that may cause a fire to break out when near the car battery.
